The Lagos State police command said on Saturday no life was lost in the accident which involved two petrol tankers and a container on the Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
The command’s spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement the accident occurred at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday along the highway.
Adejobi said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment and evacuation to ease the flow of traffic.
He said: “His team was assisted by the personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Fire Service.
“They have been working assiduously on the evacuation since 2:30 a.m.”
According to Adejobi, preliminary findings showed that the accident was caused by the driver of the container who lost control and rammed into one of the fuel tankers and caught fire.
“No life was lost and all efforts are on to ease traffic along the expressway,” the command’s spokesman added.
