The 31-year-old Dagestan superstar chalked up his 28th professional MMA victory when he successfully defended the lightweight championship against Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in September.
The lightweight champion Khabib and fan favourite Ferguson have been circling each other in recent years and White confirmed he is hoping the two will finally meet at the fourth time of asking while teasing the return of Conor McGregor to the octagon in 2020.
When he was asked if UFC had Khabib vs Ferguson in the works, White told the Daily Express in UFC 244’s post-fight press conference last week: “Yeah. Yup.”We’re working on that.”
The UFC chief also confirmed to the newspaper that the MMA promotion is looking to ‘hold the showdown in either March or April.’
Ferguson has been scheduled to face lightweight champ Khabib on four occasions, but the fight has failed to materialize due to injuries, weight-cutting issues, and other freak accidents.
But White said in September that the 35-year-old would be Khabib’s next challenger for the lightweight championship. Ferguson vs Khabib is one of the headline clashes planned for UFC as the promotion looks towards a fight-filled 2020.
Khabib’s fierce rival, Conor McGregor, has announced his sensational UFC comeback and is eyeing up a return fight for 2020.
And White insisted that next year could be one of the biggest years for UFC with its stacked roster of talent.
“If you think about next year, Conor has said publicly that he wants to come back and fight next year. You’ve got Tony versus Khabib, you’ve got [Jorge] Masvidal out there right now, you’ve got Israel Adesanya who is saying “Everybody thinks Yoel Romero is so tough, I’ll fight Yoel Romero”.
‘And then you’ve got [Paulo] Costa out there too. There’s a lot of good fights next. And oh, we haven’t talked about [Jon] Jones. Then you’ve still got Stipe [Miocic] and [Daniel] Cormier again. There’s so many good fights next year.’
