Legendary French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, known for his dramatic
and avant-garde designs, died Sunday. He was 73.
Mugler’s death was announced on his official Instagram account. “RIP. We are
devastated to announce the passing of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday
January 23rd, 2022,” the announcement said. “May his soul Rest In Peace.”
No cause of death was given.

The designer’s fashion house also confirmed the news of Mugler’s death “with deep
sadness” Sunday evening. “A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer
and image-maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger
every day,” the House of Mugler official Instagram account said.
Mugler made his name in the fashion industry throughout the 1980s and early 1990s,
with his designs being showcased in many different places, from the runway to the
stage shows.
Mugler dressed a wide range of stars across the entertainment and music world,
including Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, George Michael, David Bowie, Beyonce, Katy
Perry, Rihanna, and many more.
Born in Strasbourg in December 1948, he arrived in Paris aged 20 and created his own
label “Cafe de Paris” in 1973, a year before founding Thierry Mugler.
The LGBTQ community was a frequent source of talent and inspiration for the
designer. Mugler cast trans models in his runway shows as early as the 1980s, and
frequently collaborated with drag artists and club kids on and off the runway,
including corsetmaker Mr. Pearl.
