Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s two-match suspension has been reduced, Manchester United‘s
defensive crisis has been eased slightly after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s two-match
suspension in the Champions League was reduced to one
following a successful appeal, with UEFA confirming that the right-back will
no longer have to serve a two-match suspension.
A UEFA statement said: “The appeal lodged by Manchester United has been upheld.
“Consequently, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body decision of 23
September 2021 is amended as follows: To suspend Manchester United player, Mr.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, for the next one (1) UEFA club competition match for which he
would be otherwise eligible, for rough play.”
Wan-Bissaka was sent off in the first half of September’s 2-1 loss to Young Boys after
a clumsy challenge, and was later given a two-game suspension when the tackle was
judged ‘rough play.’
As a result, he missed the win against Villarreal and was set to miss Atalanta’s visit
on October 20, but UEFA has now downgraded the judgment to a conventional red
card, rather than something malicious.
Wan-Bissaka’s punishment has been reduced to one game, which he served against
Villarreal and he is now available to face Atalanta.
The news will come as a tremendous relief to United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer,
who understands that a win at Old Trafford is essential if his team is to avoid slipping
Man United are now third in Group F, one point behind leaders Atalanta and behind
second-placed Young Boys on goals conceded, so a loss to the Italian side might be
deadly to United’s chances of finishing first in the group.
The forced absences of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, both center-backs,
haven’t helped matters. Before the international break, the former injured his calf,
while the latter injured his groin while playing for France.
Last season, Atalanta was the top-scoring side in Serie A, scoring 90 goals in 38
games, but that attacking prowess has been hard to come by this season. Gian Piero
Gasperini’s team is currently ninth in the league rankings, with their ten goals being
bettered by eight different teams.
