The New Orleans Saints are signing running back Devine Ozigbo off the Jacksonville
Jaguars practice squad. NFL reporter Aaron Wilson broke the news on Tuesday
evening of Ozigbo returning to New Orleans. The Saints signed him as an undrafted
free agent in 2019.
Devine Ozigbo has appeared in 18 games for the Jaguars over the previous two
seasons. He’s rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and caught 12
passes for 65 yards.
Ozigbo was initially an undrafted free agent signing of the Saints in 2019 out of
Nebraska. He was released by the team at the end of training camp and claimed off
waivers by the Jaguars.
The Saints were in need of help at running back with Tony Jones Jr. set to miss
multiple weeks due to an ankle injury.
New Orleans worked out five running backs on Tuesday prior to signing Ozigbo away
from the Jaguars. Lamar Miller, Duke Johnson, Brian Hill, Ito Smith, and Ryquell
Armstead was the back the Saints tried out.
Some fans may remember Ozigbo from the 2019 preseason when he signed with
New Orleans as an undrafted rookie out of Nebraska. He performed well in all phases
as a runner, receiver, and even in pass protection, but was buried on the Saints depth
chart behind Alvin Kamara, Latavius Murray, and special teams ace Dwayne
Washington. Since joining Jacksonville, he’s languished behind a strong backfield
built around James Robinson and, until his preseason injury, first-round draft pick
Now 25 years old and with just 22 NFL touches to his name (10 carries for 28 rushing
yards, plus 12 receptions for 65 receiving yards), Ozigbo offers a nice injection of
athleticism to the position. His 8.11 Relative Athletic Score fits the prototype the
Saints have valued.
