Great Britain’s Kadeena Cox retained her Paralympic women’s C4-5 500m time trial
title at the Izu Velodrome
of what Cox hopes will be another Olympic multisport double.
It was the third gold medal of Cox’s Paralympics career after she claimed victory in
both cycling and athletics events five years ago.
With the win, Cox also became the first black athlete in history to secure a gold
medal for Great Britain in cycling across disabled and non-disabled athletes.
Her latest triumph strengthened Britain’s hold on second place at this summer’s
Games with a tally of seven golds and 21 medals in total, eight off-leaders China.
‘I tried to enjoy this moment. I did enjoy Rio but I feel like I was so trying to go well
that I didn’t really enjoy it so I really wanted to enjoy it,’ Cox told Channel 4 shortly
after her win.
‘It didn’t hit me until I got to the podium and then I realized why I had done it all so
it’s a bit overwhelming.
Cox dedicated her gold medal to her grandfather, who had been in and out of hospital
in the lead-up to the Games.
‘My grandad has not been well. He’s been in and out of the hospital and he sent me
a message just saying, “Go get the gold”, so this one was for my grandad,’ she added.
‘I just love him. He’s one of my biggest supporters. He was a boxer so he’s living his
dreams through me now and this one’s for him.’
