Richarlison sympathizes with Cavani after being shown a red card
Richarlison has defended Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani after he was shown a red card
in Uruguay’s defeat to Brazil,
though admits the challenge could have been far more serious. Cavani went in late on Richarlison during
Tuesday night’s clash in Montevideo, catching his ankle with his studs and was initially only shown a yellow card.

But VAR felt the challenge merited a red card and encouraged the referee to upgrade his punishment, with
an astonished Cavani given his marching orders late on in the match.
Richarlison, who netted the Selecao’s second goal in the 2-0 win, had sympathy for Cavani afterward and does not believe he intended to hurt him, though did feel the challenge was dangerous.
‘It was a ball dispute and of course, he went over the top,’ the Everton star told CBF TV after the game. ‘If my foot
was planted there on the floor, maybe it could even have broken my ankle.
