US Elects first black gay members of Congress
First gay black members of Congress ever are elected, Richie Torres was announced to have held the safe
Democratic position in New York‘s 15th District soon after polls closed.
He replaced retiring representative José Serrano, as called by Decision Desk HQ. And Mondaire Jones,
another Democratic nominee in New York, has also joined Torres is making headlines.

He replaces retiring Nita Lowey in the Democratic 17th District. In the congressional primary in June,
Torres beat Rubén Diaz Senior, who was on the New York City Council and had a long history of anti-LGBT+ comments.
After beating Díaz, Torres told CBS: ‘Look, the triumph of an openly LGBTQ congressional candidate over a leading homophobic in state politics — that to me represents long-overdue poetic justice.
‘What better way to celebrate Pride Month than to defeat the politics of homophobia?’
